The impact of music education on children is profound.

Music does more than just make sounds, it changes the way we think and act. The skills your child will learn in music will help them be successful on the stage, in the classroom, and for the rest of their lives.

What is Orchestra?

Message from the director:

I would like to encourage you to join band, orchestra or choir at the secondary campus you attend in the Mercedes district. The beginning classes at Harrell & Chacon Middle Schools are designed to have you learn how to properly play the instrument as well as learn how to read the music. Students begin the process in the 6th grade. Then each year after you begin, you advance to the performing groups at each middle school and then to the High School level. At the high school level, then your skills continue to develop to a high level in the various performing groups.... Varsity Orchestra, Non Varsity Orchestra, Mariachi, Mighty Tiger Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic and Concert Bands, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, and percussion ensembles.

Students who participate in music have the lowest levels of current and lifelong use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs among any group in our society.

H. Con. Res 266 United States Senate, June 2000

Students taking courses in music performance and music appreciation scored higher in the SAT than students with no arts participation.
