What is Band?

Message from the director:

Parents, your child has the opportunity to join the 6th grade Beginning Band. In band your child will apply math concepts (rhythm); develop fine motor skills; learn and apply a new system of notation; learn critical listening skills; learn to work as part of a team. Thank you for supporting your studentís involvement in band. The musical skill and knowledge learned here will last a lifetime. Research has shown that students with musical backgrounds often earn higher grades, score higher on standardized tests, and develop leadership and social skills that help them later in life. I am grateful to be part of this process

Students who participate in music have the lowest levels of current and lifelong use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs among any group in our society.

H. Con. Res 266 United States Senate, June 2000

Students taking courses in music performance and music appreciation scored higher in the SAT than students with no arts participation.

College Entrance Examination Board College-Bound Seniors National Report

Schools that have music programs have significantly higher graduation rates than those without music programs (90.2 percent compared to 72.9 percent).
